The 80's - Technological developments

There was no stopping what began in 1973. Digital technology gradually and completely took over the production area of Hansa Luftbild. Traditional cartography went through a far reaching and profound change. The electronically controlled drawing table Wild Aviotab TA, of the 70’s, was a first in the new digital wave. It was taken into operation at Hansa Luftbild in 1976.

The following headlines appear in the 1981 May edition of " Hansa-Luftbild-Informationen"
"Digital Map Production:….Hub of the system is the computer system PDP 11/70 with 192KB of main memory…. The central computer is an interactive work station with a Tectronic screen and digitising table …. The last link in the chain, though in off-line mode, is the Konsberg automatic drawing table 1216, for high precision final drawings."

In 1985 Hansa Luftbild made a substantial contribution to the development of a standardised procedure for the development of colour infra-red film (CIR), which facilitated virtually consistent reproduction of colour and balance. This procedure was publicised and adopted as a guideline by the Association of German Engineers (Verein Deutsche Ingenieure).

The 80’s saw many developments. For the first time the planes were navigated with GPS. The film development process was optimised . A completely new range of services were integrated into the product line. Services completely independent of aerial photography developed under the umbrella of Geoinformation Systems (GIS): software development, electric grid documentation, land use and development planning and many more.

An analytical stereoplotter "Intergraph Intermap Analytic" which has been in operation at Hansa Luftbild since 1988. The digitally captured data is directly superimposed inside the eyepiece. The operator can overlay captured data and aerial images at the same time.

Colour infrared images are particularly helpful in the evaluation of vegetation, tree and bush cover.
